Hopefully, at least some of the people who are reading this are following this blog to actually get to know more about me because of Power Trio Studios. If that’s the case, you should know that I am a HUGE pro wrestling fan. I’ve been a WWE (formally WWF or World Wrestling Federation) fanatic since I was 13 years old. Why such a late bloomer you ask? Well, I wasn’t exactly allowed to watch wrestling when I was young. That put me at a disadvantage from the start. If anyone remembers the big wrestling boom from the late 90’s you’d know why.
I came in at the very end of that era. 2002 was the year I finally said to hell with this restriction. I wanted to be in the loop. I always had. So I finally started to rather sneakily (word?) watch the WWE behind my parents back. Instantly, I was hooked. Getting to know the characters and feuds that went on inside the squared circle, not to mention catching up on all the history I missed, was a daunting task at first. But I was excited to learn everything I could about it. Seeing guys like The Undertaker, Ric Flair, Triple H, Chris Jericho, Rob Van Dam, Kane, Booker T and Edge among many others every week drew me right on in to the endless soap opera.
However, there were 2 big names that made me want nothing more than to get inside of a wrestling ring and hit a leg drop and a superkick on someone. Those names were “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan and “The Heart Break Kid” Shawn Michaels. I’m sure you’ve heard of at least one of those guys. Back in ‘02 both these men made huge in-ring returns after years of absense. Hogan returned to the WWE as his original incarnation after almost a decade of being away and playing a “bad guy” character in WWE’s now out-of-business rival WCW (World Championship Wrestling). Shawn Michaels had a then thought career ending back injury in 1998 and made his out-of-nowhere comeback in the latter months of 2002. Both men were legends already for similar and differing reasons. However, they cemented their legacies when they both came back to win a WWE World Championship in miraculous fashions. They captured my attention, loyalty and imagination. No year in wrestling has ever come close to that first one for me.
As the years went by and saw the older and 3 quarters retired Hogan rise to reality tv fame, HBK (Michales) was having the best matches pro wrestling has ever, and probably will ever, see. When I grew older, I found myself respecting Michales’s talent both in the ring and on the microphone more and more. While Hulk Hogan will always hold a special red and yellow place in my Hulkamaniac heart, HBK may have recently stolen the show with his recent, extremely sincere, retirement from the industry. The Show Stopper, The Main Event, THE ICON!!!! The one and only Heart Break Kid will be sadly but fondly missed by many fans around the world; this one especially. So here’s to you HBK! Maybe we’ll see ya down the road for one more classic one day.
Oh and by the way; I may have never got that leg drop in, but Jason Burns hit that superkick for me. ;)
